Black edges on a bathroom mirror? What causes them and how to slow the spread

Image
Black spots creeping in from the edges of a bathroom mirror look like dirt at first. They are not. The dark patches are the mirror's reflective backing breaking down, and once it starts, no cleaning product will bring the silver back. What you can do is understand why it started and stop it from spreading fast. What the black edge actually is A mirror is glass with a thin layer of silver on the back, protected by paint. Where moisture, cleaning chemicals, or salty air reach that backing, the silver oxidises and turns black. Because the backing is behind the glass, the damage shows through as dark spots or a dark border you cannot wipe away from the front. People call it desilvering or mirror rot. Why bathrooms speed it up Three things attack the backing. Steam and condensation keep the mirror damp for hours, and water wicks into the edges where the backing is most exposed. Ammonia-based glass cleaners, sprayed directly on the mirror, run down and pool at the bottom edge, eatin...

Mosquito Mesh for Aluminium Sliding Windows: Types, 2026 Prices, and How to Choose

In most Indian cities a window without mesh is an open invitation to mosquitoes. If you are ordering aluminium sliding windows, the mesh decision changes the track count, the price and how you use the window daily. Here is what is actually available in 2026 and what it costs.

The main mesh options for sliding windows

  1. Sliding mesh panel on a 3-track frame. The mesh gets its own track and slides like a third shutter. This is the cleanest factory solution - nothing sticks out, and you slide the mesh across only in mosquito season. Needs the 3-track frame ordered from day one; it is difficult to add to a 2-track window later.
  2. Frame-mounted mesh (magnetic or screwed aluminium frame). A separate mesh frame fixed over the window from inside. Works on existing 2-track windows and is the most common retrofit. Magnetic frames lift off for washing; screwed frames are sturdier for high floors.
  3. Pleated (retractable) mesh. A folding mesh that pulls across on a rail and parks to one side. Looks premium, suits wide sliders and balcony doors, costs the most and has more moving parts to maintain.
  4. Velcro mesh. The cheapest option for rented homes. Fine for a season, but it sags, the velcro weakens with dust, and it looks temporary - because it is.

What mesh costs in 2026 (typical market ranges)

  • Fibreglass mesh, the standard grey/black netting: roughly Rs 15-35 per sq ft for the material itself
  • Magnetic frame retrofit fitted by a local fabricator: roughly Rs 120-250 per sq ft of window area, depending on city and frame quality
  • Sliding mesh shutter as part of a new 3-track window: adds roughly Rs 60-150 per sq ft over the 2-track window price
  • Pleated retractable systems: roughly Rs 250-500 per sq ft fitted
  • Velcro kits: a few hundred rupees per window, DIY

Prices vary by city, fabricator and mesh grade - treat these as negotiation ranges, not quotes. Stainless steel "pet-proof" or security-grade meshes cost significantly more than fibreglass.

How to choose - 5 checks before you pay

  1. Decide the mesh before the frame. If you want the built-in sliding mesh, the window must be 3-track. Changing your mind after fabrication is expensive.
  2. Check the mesh grade, not just the colour. Standard 18x16 weave fibreglass stops mosquitoes; ask for it by specification. "No-see-um" finer weaves block tiny insects but reduce airflow slightly.
  3. Look at the frame corners. On magnetic and sliding frames, plastic corners crack first. Aluminium corner joints last longer.
  4. Test the slide. A mesh shutter should glide with one finger. If the showroom sample grinds, yours will too.
  5. Ask who services it. Mesh tears are a when, not an if. A fabricator who re-meshes frames for a small fee is worth more than a slightly cheaper first price.

Match the mesh to how you live: full-time mesh cities (coastal, near open drains or parks) justify the 3-track built-in panel; occasional use suits a removable magnetic frame. Either way, decide before the window is fabricated - retrofitting always costs more than choosing well once.
