Black edges on a bathroom mirror? What causes them and how to slow the spread

Image
Black spots creeping in from the edges of a bathroom mirror look like dirt at first. They are not. The dark patches are the mirror's reflective backing breaking down, and once it starts, no cleaning product will bring the silver back. What you can do is understand why it started and stop it from spreading fast. What the black edge actually is A mirror is glass with a thin layer of silver on the back, protected by paint. Where moisture, cleaning chemicals, or salty air reach that backing, the silver oxidises and turns black. Because the backing is behind the glass, the damage shows through as dark spots or a dark border you cannot wipe away from the front. People call it desilvering or mirror rot. Why bathrooms speed it up Three things attack the backing. Steam and condensation keep the mirror damp for hours, and water wicks into the edges where the backing is most exposed. Ammonia-based glass cleaners, sprayed directly on the mirror, run down and pool at the bottom edge, eatin...

Aluminium Sliding Window Price in India (2026): Ranges and What Changes the Cost

Every aluminium window is made to measure, so no honest guide can give you an exact price without seeing your opening. What a guide can do is show the real market ranges and, more usefully, explain exactly what moves your quote up or down. Industry guides for 2026 put fitted aluminium windows in India roughly between Rs 450 and Rs 1,300+ per sq ft - the spread is large because the choices are.

Typical ranges by design (fitted, per sq ft)

  • Basic 2-track sliding, standard sizes: the lower end, roughly Rs 450-650. The workhorse of Indian homes.
  • 3-track sliding with mosquito mesh: roughly Rs 550-800. The mesh track adds material and cost.
  • Casement (openable) windows: usually a little above sliding in the same profile series, because of hinges, handles and locking hardware.
  • Slim and ultra-slim frames, corner windows, floor-to-ceiling formats: Rs 800-1,300+, driven by premium profile systems and thicker glass.
  • Thermally broken profiles with premium glazing: the top of the range, but they cut heat gain and AC load in sun-facing rooms.

What actually changes your quote

  1. Profile system and brand. A branded system (Fenesta, TOSTEM, Eternia, Technal) costs more than a local fabricator's generic section, and buys better tolerances, gaskets and warranty support.
  2. Glass. Single clear glass is cheapest. Double-glazed units, toughened glass, laminated safety glass and low-E coatings each add cost - and each solves a real problem (noise, safety, heat).
  3. Frame thickness and sightline. Slimmer frames need stronger, better-engineered profiles, so "less frame" usually means more cost, not less.
  4. Hardware. Rollers, locks, handles and mesh are where cheap quotes cut corners. Bad rollers are the number one reason sliding windows start jamming within two years.
  5. Size and shape. Very large panes need thicker glass and sometimes structural reinforcement; arches and unusual shapes add fabrication time.
  6. Installation quality. Level fitting, proper sealing and correct anchoring decide whether the window stays leak-free in its first monsoon. A cheap installation ruins an expensive window.

How to compare quotes without getting fooled

Ask every fabricator to quote the same specification in writing: profile brand and series, glass type and thickness, hardware brand, mesh included or not, and installation scope. Two quotes that differ by Rs 200 per sq ft are usually quoting different windows. The measured, written quote is the only reliable figure - treat any phone estimate as a starting range, not a budget.
